This Monday we’ve got Lembit Opik MP vs Mark Clark, head of Conservative Future
debating the motion: This House Would introduce quotas for immigration. It’s
going to be a great topical debate and I expect to hear some fiery floor
speeches from you guys on a topic as inflammatory as this. Foundation Dinner
tickets will go on sale from Monday so come and speak to me and Cormac after
the debate.
Dear Debaters,
There’s a lot to say this week but I will try and be as expeditious as possible. Great debate last week as Katy Clark MP and Daniel Kawczynski MP battled for the moral high ground in the abortion debate. This Monday it’s Edward Garnier MP QC debating alongside and against other barristers on the motion:
THW allow information gathered through torture in foreign countries to be used in British courts
Foundation Dinner, our swansong, is fast approaching and tickets go on sale from this Monday. The whole event costs £38 for members and £48 for non-members. The program will be as follows:
6pm: Champagne reception in the South Cloisters
7pm: Dinner in the JBR – the menu can be found on the website and below
9pm: Debate in the Housman Room
We have four speakers confirmed including a shadow cabinet member and a Labour government member – more information will follow when I’ve confirmed the speaker list. If you wish to come just to the debate then tickets will go on sale for £5. If you wish to buy either ticket then please talk to me after the debates on Monday nights.
Elections for next year’s committee will take place at our AGM on February 25th at 6:30 on the Monday evening in the Old Refectory – only members can run for the positions (which are on the website) and only members may vote.
Our final debate of this half term will be on Monday 4th February. However, it is part of One World Week organised by the Union and College and, we have been allotted only 50 places. We have already given out 27 so the first 23 who email me or speak to me on Monday will get the other places on the guest list. The issues include multiculturalism, racism and sexism, and the environment. The panel of speakers will be: Lord McNally, Ruqayyah Collector, NUS Black Students' Officer, Zohra Moosa, Senior Policy Officer Race & Gender at the Fawcett Society, Dr Derek Wall, male principle speaker, Green Party. Both Foundation Dinner and One World Week will fill up fast so be sure to pay or ask for tickets reasonably soon.
The Menu for Foundation Dinner is as follows:
Starter: Mixed leaf salad with smoked salmon, pine nuts, and a honey mustard dressing.
Main: Duck a l’orange with potato fondant, red cabbage, roast vegetable stack, and beetroot game chips.
Main (Veg): Pumpkin, cashew nut and lentil wellington with a peppercorn sauce served with a roast vegetable stack.
Dessert: Poached Pears in aromatic spiced port syrup, served with crème fraiche and a chocolate wafer
There will be vegan options, non-nut options, and non-alcoholic desert options for all the courses.
